Introducing Paarl

Paarl is South Africa’s third oldest town and is well known for the three enormous granite rock formations that make up the Paarl Mountains. After the rain these mountains gleam like pearls which is how the city got its name. Found here is the Victor Verster Correctional Centre, which is the prison Nelson Mandela was released from in 1990; in honor of this a bronze statue was erected outside the prison.

The town is steeped in history and for a little history on the Afrikaans language there is the Afrikaans Language Museum and the Taal Monument pays tribute to the influences that a variety of languages had on Afrikaans. There is also walking tour that winds through the city and stops at many of the historical sites in the town’s Main Street. The Paarl Wine Route has some well known wines along it like Laborie, Nederberg and KWV Wine Emporium.

There are a number of family friendly activities to take part in, namely hiking trails, mountain biking and horst trails. In addition to wine tasting, there is also olive tasting at Buffet Olives and chocolate tasting at DV Artisan Chocolate where chocolate making has become an art.

The weather in Paarl is synonymous with a Mediterranean climate with cold wet winters and dry hot summers. It is advisable to visit the area during the warmer months from October through to April when the temperatures reach maximums of 30C. The wetter winter months can get cold and unpleasant but the temperatures only dip to around 15C.

Some of the must see stops when visiting Paarl:
