Introducing Grabouw

Grabouw is a small town located in the Western Cape, roughly an hour’s drive south-east from Cape Town along the N2 highway. The town was created on a farm owned by Cape Town painter, Wilhelm Langschmidt, who built the village around his wife’s trading store and named it after a town in Germany where he was born called Grabow. Situated in the heart of Elgin Valley which is South Africa’s largest single export fruit producing area.

Apart from soaking in the beauty of the surrounding landscapes Grabouw has a host of activities to enjoy.  The Elgin Valley forms part of the world’s first biodiversity wine route, the Green Mountain Eco Route and there are many farms along this route that offer a wide selection of wines.

There is also a guided tour of the Oude Molen Distillery to see how brandy is made and also see the biggest copper pot stills in the Southern Hemisphere. Other activities that can be enjoyed are hiking, mountain biking, fishing, kayaking and rock pool swimming; there is something for everyone in this sleepy little town.

Grabouw experiences a moderate Mediterranean climate with wet winters and dry hot summers. In the winter months the temperatures average around 17C while in summer it can get up to around 27C. Even though most of the rainfall is received in the winter months, the strong south-easterly winds in summer can bring some rain with it.
