Introducing Constantia

Constantia is one of Cape Town’s most beautiful suburbs. Lying at the foot of the Constantiaberg Mountains, this suburb is well known for its collection of well known vineyards. The story goes that Simon van der Stel was granted a farm in 1685 and he named it after the daughter of his benefactor, Constanza which is how the area became to be known as Constantia now.

The area was then divided, after his death, into the Groot Constantia and Bergvliet. Groot Constantia, as its name implies is the largest wine estate and has Van der Stel’s original manor house which is now a museum. Nearly all of the wine estates offer wine tasting and cellar tours and most have restaurants that have on offer some of the best cuisine in the country.

Wine estates are not all the area has to offer visitors; there is a collection of farm stalls selling local produce and a range of organic products as well as lifestyle and décor shops where local artists sell their wares. Constantia is also a stone’s throw away from the beautiful Table Mountain National Park where visitors can mountain bike, rock climb, hang glide, picnic and scuba dive.

The Mediterranean climate is ideally suited to the growing of the noble varieties of grapes as there is little to no frost in the area and the summers are warm but not too hot. Most of the rainfall is received in winter, making for a cold, wet and windy few months. Summers are warm with sunny day’s ideal for picnics on the lawns of the wine estates.
