Introducing Clanwilliam

Clanwilliam is one of the 10 oldest towns in South Africa; it is located in the Olifants River Valley between the Cedarberg mountains and the Olifants River in the Western Cape. The town may be small but it is surrounded but a variety of activities to suite every one.

The town is located in the heart of the flower belt and the annual Clanwilliam Flower Festival held in August every year sees visitors flocking to the town to witness the large volumes of beautiful flowers. Apart from these flowers, the mountains are also covered with rooibos plantations and visitors to the town can go on tours through the rooibos tea factory to see how it is made as well as sample some of the products on offer including a rooibos liquer.

There are hikes and horse trails in the surrounding mountains where the beautiful scenery can be experienced up close and personal. The Doring River and Clanwilliam Dam offer a variety of water sports including white water rafting, waterskiing and fishing. Along the breathtaking Pakhuis Pass is some of the most easily accessible rock art in South Africa, as well as beautiful waterfalls and rock formations.

Clanwilliam has a fairly temperate climate with the winter months reaching around 17C and the summer months increasing to around 31C on average. The region doesn’t receive much rainfall with most of its rain being received in the winter months. This summers in Clanwilliam tend to get a lot hotter than the rest of the province, so outdoor activities are best done in the morning.
