Introducing Breede Valley

The Breede Valley in the Western Cape is definitely one of the region’s biggest calling cards, not only because of the abundance of wine routes but because of the unrivalled beauty of the region.

The valley extends from the Karoo in the north to McGregor in the south to Gouda in the west and Montagu in the east and covers over 50 different wine estates that can be explored along a variety of wine routes. The name for the valley comes from the Breede River that runs through the valley to the Indian Ocean and supplies the region with its water.

The hot climate of the Breede Valley make it ideal for the production of desert wines especially the sweeter wines like Hanepoot and Muscadel. Along with a brandy route the popular Route 66 also runs through the valley, which is said to be the longest wine route in the world. The Breede River Valley is made up of a collection of small quaint towns, like Montagu, Tulbagh and Robertson that offer a refuge from the hustle and bustle of big city life.

The climate of the area is diverse but it does still fall under a Mediterranean climate with wet, cold and windy winters and dry warm summers. The amount of rain received varies greatly with the northern and western areas receiving large amounts of rain while the south and west areas receive very little rain on average.

The summer months can average 30C with some of the areas reaching around 40C. The vegetation is made up of Karoo shrubs in the east and Fynbos in the western regions.
