Introducing Eastern Cape

The second largest province in South Africa, the Eastern Cape boasts the Sunshine Coast, aptly named because it has on average 7 – 8 hours of sunshine a day throughout the year. Located between the Western Cape and KwaZulu Natal along the east coast of South Africa, this province is home to Jeffrey’s Bay, which is world renowned for its ideal surfing conditions. The province is also the birthplace of many of South African’s most influential leaders, namely Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki and Steve Biko.

Local vegetation in the Eastern Cape region varies from Fynbos to  Grasslands to Indigenous forest. There are a large number of nature reserves in the province that provide for some spectacular game viewing despite the fact that it does not have the  traditional lowveld vegetation found in the more northern part of the country. The Eastern Cape provides a wide range of activities including South Africa’s only commercial ski resort located in the northern part of the province. The beaches of the province also vary from the busier beaches of East London to vast stretches of untamed coastline. Rich in culture, the Eastern Cape has a collection of quaint little towns, like Grahamstown, that showcase the history of South Africa.

The climate in the Eastern Cape is as varied as the landscape of the region. The west of the province has frost winters and hot summers while the east has summer rainfall and the climate is more subtropical. The inland areas can get extremely cold and snowfall is not uncommon in the winter months. Weather along the Sunshine Coast is almost perfect with long days of sunshine and very temperate winters.
