Covering 118,797 sq km (45,869 sq miles), the North West Province in South Africa was created in 1994 by the merger of Bophuthatswana, one of the former bantustans (or black homelands), and the western part of Transvaal, one of the four former South African provinces. Much of the North West province consists of flat areas of scattered trees and grassland. In the northeast, the Magaliesberg mountain range extends about 130 km from Pretoria to Rustenburg. The Vaal River flows along the southern border of the province. The temperatures range from 17° to 31° C in the summer and from 3° to 21° C in the winter. Annual rainfall totals about 360 mm, with almost all of it falling during the summer months which is between October and April.

Pilanesberg National Park

The Pilanesberg Game Reserve is situated in the Bojanala Region of the North West Province, adjacent to Sun City in South Africa. Set in the crater of a long extinct volcano, the Pilanesberg National Park ranks among the largest national parks in South Africa. Covering an area of 55 000 hectare, the Pilansberg National Park is the fourth largest national park in South Africa. The beauty of the Pilanesberg region is reflected in a large central lake, the Mankwe Dam. Over time, wind and water have carved a spectacular landscape with rocky outcrops, open grasslands, wooded valleys and thickets. Visitors to the Pilanesberg are provided with many opportunities to experience the untamed African bush. There are nearly 200 kilometres of excellent quality roads for either self-drives or guided drives, and professional guides operate within the park.

Sun City Resort

The Sun City Resort in South Africa's North West Province is also called "Africa's Kingdom of Pleasure". Besides its four resort hotels (The Cabanas Hotel, The Sun City Main Hotel, The Cascades Hotel and the Palace of the Lost City Hotel), Sun City offers a lot of activities, facilities and entertainment options. These include the casino, entertainment shows, swimming pools and the water world fun park, the lake where one can enjoy water sports. Madikwe Game Reserve

The Madikwe Game Reserve in South Africa's North West Province is home to 66 mammal species including the Big Five ( lion, rhino, buffalo, leopard, elephant) and approximately 300 resident and migrant bird species. The Madikwe Game Reserve is one of South Africa's largest game reserves.

Madikwe has the distinction of being one of the few game reserves in the world to be proclaimed purely on the grounds of being the most appropriate and sustainable land use for an area.

Madikwe represents an extension to this philosophy in that it is run as a joint venture between the State, the private sector and local communities. The success of this approach has made this game reserve the role model for similar ventures being started up elsewhere in South Africa. Visitors to the Madikwe Game Reserve are taken on guided day and night game drives are well as walking safaris. Excellent accommodation is available at various private lodges in the reserve such as Jaci's Game Lodge ( Safari Lodge and Tree Lodge), Etali Game Lodge, Madikwe Hills Game Lodge, Madikwe River Lodge, Madikwe Safari Lodge). There are no day visitor facilities; only residents at a lodge may enter the reserve.
